BARRINGTON Cambridgeshire

All Saints is the Parish church of Barrington. It is the largest church building in the Orwell Group and serves a semi-rural community of some 1000 people.

The Orwell group of parishes work together led by one priest, and events such as 5th Sunday rotate around the group while some other services are also shared (eg Healing, All Souls, and the various Easter services etc.). This offers a diversity of approaches and parts of congregations can be found moving around the parishes. Each parish has a Eucharist one Sunday in the month and at least one other service in the morning or the evening.

Services are in the main Common Worship or All Age there is a BCP Evensong once a month and there are refreshments after the main services during the morning. Self catered Refreshments are also available for visitors at other times. The church is well heated.

The clunch church stands at the east end of the 22 acre village green. Although there is evidence of an earlier 12th century building, it mostly dates from the 13th and 14th centuries with medieval roof, pews and south door. The Barnack stone font is thought to be a relic of an earlier Saxon church on the site.  Also of interest is the 16th century parish chest, a 17th century bier, fascinating corbels of local people, the staircase to an earlier rood screen, the fine Jacobean pulpit and the late 15th century Bendyshe chapel off the north aisle with its reredos by Sir Ninian Comper. The vestry off the south aisle replaces a pre-reformation chantry. The west tower contains six bells. The chancel was restored in Victorian times when its present furnishings were installed. All Saints; Church is a grade 1 listed building.

Bell Ringing

There has been a bell-ringing team in Barrington for more than thirty years with a varying level of skill and membership over that time.  A significant number of young people have learnt to ring over the years and of recent years a number of more mature people have taken up the pastime. We are a happy and relaxed group with a will to progress but do not get stressed if things do not go as fast as perhaps they should.

Some years ago we organised the rehanging of the bells which made them much easier to ring; so that nearly every one can ring the tenor; which is the heaviest bell. The picture is of the treble, which is the lightest bell, before the rehanging.

We ring for weddings and church festivals which always brings out the best in us.

All are welcome; skilled, unskilled or newcomers.
Practice night is Monday between 8.00 pm and 9.00 pm.

Church Flowers

Our aim is to try and maintain a floral welcome in our Village Church throughout the year. A small group of enthusiastic volunteers, church members or not, take turns in providing flowers for the altar, either in vases or arranged in oasis. A simple pedestal arrangement in front of the north door makes a nice focal point as you enter the Church.

We use foliage and flowers from local gardens as much as possible, topped up with market or supermarket bunches. For the main church festivals of Easter, Harvest and Christmas, we work together as a team and have a very sociable time filling the church with appropriate arrangements. We are all amateurs, just people who enjoy seeing and working with flowers in the peaceful setting of our lovely old church.

We would welcome more volunteers. Anyone who feels they might like to join us, please give me a call.

Barrington Church Choir

Barrington church choir was restarted in 1964 and has contributed to the church's worship ever since. Currently the choir leads the singing at the 9:30 Eucharist. At the 6:00 pm Evensong, they facilitate traditional Anglican chant psalm singing as well as supporting the hymns.

They also join with singers from other parishes in our Benefice to form a joint choir for the 2nd Sunday in the month.
We are always keen to welcome new singers or players. The 11:00 am service would benefit from a music group. If you feel that you would like to sing or play in a small friendly group, please contact.
